Bringing a 1900s chest of drawers back to life
12 May 2026Every antique piece arrives at the workshop with its story — and its scars. This 1900s solid-oak chest had crossed a century without ever being handled gently.
The diagnosis
First, we observe: stuck drawers, oxidised varnish, grimy hardware. Nothing irreversible. The frame is sound, which is what matters.
Stripping
We patiently remove the layers of old varnish, by hand, without attacking the wood. The oak grain reappears, alive.
The finish
Rather than a film-forming varnish, we choose a natural oil: it nourishes the wood deeply, protects it, and lets the material breathe. Two coats, a light sanding between each, and the chest regains its warmth.
To restore is not to erase time — it is to do it justice.
